Email Automation for Small Businesses: 5 Sequences That Sell While You Sleep

A freelance consultant with 200 contacts can set up an automated sequence that nurtures leads, follows up on proposals, and asks for referrals — without touching a keyboard. The tools are free (or nearly free). The sequences take an afternoon to build. And once they're running, they work 24/7 — every day, every night, every weekend, while you focus on delivering your service.

Sequence 1: The Welcome Sequence (for new subscribers)

Trigger: Someone joins your email list. Email 1 (immediately): Welcome + deliver the promised content (lead magnet, guide, checklist). Email 2 (day 2): Your story — who you are, who you help, why you do it. Email 3 (day 4): Your best piece of content (blog post, video, case study). Email 4 (day 7): Soft pitch — "If you're dealing with [problem], here's how we help." This sequence builds trust before asking for anything. Open rate for welcome sequences: 50-60% (vs 20% for regular newsletters).

Sequence 2: The Lead Nurture Sequence (for prospects not ready to buy)

Trigger: Someone downloads a resource or fills a form but doesn't buy. Duration: 6-8 emails over 4-6 weeks. Each email delivers one piece of value: a tip, a case study, a common mistake, a resource. The last 2 emails escalate: "Are you still thinking about [solution]?" + "Last chance: book a free call before [date]." 80% of sales happen after the 5th contact — this sequence does the contacting for you.
